Why A Mushroom Festival?
The mushroom, often portrayed only as a food product, plays a remarkable role in developing and sustaining environmental stability. Mushroom mycelia will often act as the critical factor in maintaining healthy soil, by absorbing and processing toxins, heavy metals, and even synthetic substances such as plastic or diesel fuel, and converting them into useful organic nutrients.
Mushrooms have a wide range of applications beyond environmental remediation; for example, their fibers can be used for sustainable production of clothing. The network of underground fibers which makes up the main part of the mushroom organism, called the Mycelium, even resembles the human brain in its structure, and it’s effective methods of communication can give us insight into our own technologies. In our 21st century world, where our traditional methods of production, consumption, and interaction with the environment break down a little more each day, we can afford to widen our perspective and learn from the living things around us.
Through this Festival, we hope to educate ourselves and one another by exploring both the practical and the intuitive intricacies of the mushroom. We hope you come celebrate with us as we learn how this life form can inspire us artistically, and help us move forward into a sustainable future.
